What to do if you’ve found or rescued a wild rabbit

Orlando Rabbit Care and Adoptions only works with domestic (European) rabbits and cannot help with rescuing or caring for wild rabbits. We provide the following information for your use.

Fewer than 10% of orphaned rabbits survive a week, and the care that people attempt to provide can be illegal, unnecessary, and potentially harmful. The best thing you can do is put the bunny right back in the general area where found him and leave the area. Mom will only come back at night to call and find him. Rabbit moms only nurse their young for approximately 5 minutes a day, and will return to the nest in the morning and evening. If injured, please contact a Wildlife Rehabilitator or rabbit vet immediately.

The following article will help to answer some additional questions

If you find baby bunnies

  • If their nest has been damaged it can be repaired. Look for a shallow depression lined with grass/fur. Place babies in nest with light layers at grass to hide them. Leave the area, or the mother won’t return. (Mothers return only at dawn & dusk.)

  • If you find healthy bunnies that are 4-5 inches long, able to hop, with eyes open and ears up, they do not need help. They are able to survive on their own. Leave them alone.
